Discussions > Kedleston Rd Bus Lane!

Can't believe the council are even considering this - the road is too narrow and at places the pavement is hardly wide enough for two people to pass each other - it'll be a major hazard to cyclists and pedestrians alike.

So called cyclist friendly councillors like Lucy Clare backed the Duffield Rd scheme - let's hope they don't do the same with this one.

I can't really imagine a bus lane down there as it does seem to narrow. I think it does open out a bit so maybe it will only be for a short distance although given the new narrow lanes on Duffield Rd I wouldnt be susprised to see it done.

I've had some more info on this one. The proposed bus lane won't run the full length of Kedleston Road, it is only two small bits on the in bound route into town, opposite the Jonty Farmer and then from just after Arther Hind Close to the Polish Club. It will only be in effect during rush hour Monday to Friday.

That might be even worse than one continuous lane. The Duffield Rd section where the bus lane ends is possibly the worst bit - the cars just cut back to the left lane without really checking if a bike is inside them. Normally I'd ride to the right of the stationary traffic on Kedleston Rd - this is where drivers look for things overtaking them in their right hand mirror, not on the inside - a bus lane on the inside will effectively force you to ride inside them on their left and then invite them to cut back in at the two occasions the bus lane ends. It's a real potential hazard for cyclists.

I went to see the plans at the exhibition recently. It seems ok to me. They're taking surplus road space and giving it to public transport, at the point where the traffic currently queues. Cyclists can use the bus lane. I use this route everyday, and it doesn't bother me in the least. At the exhibition, people were concerned that cyclists could be vulnerable outbound. Is this any different to any road in Derby? Cars always have to slow down and then safely overtake bikes, this is the case now.

Wider lanes are safer for cyclists - if you think cars are going to queue up behind a cyclist rather than try and force their way past you live in a different world to the rest of us. If you look at the outward bound Duffield Rd you'll see what I mean.
