Discussions > Bike Thefts - can the police help?

There are a number of threads on here with details of stolen bikes, plus the local press have carried reports from the police that there has been an increase in the number of bikes being stolen. I was however disappointed that the police did not propose any additional actions that they would be taking. There was no mention of increased patrols in known theft hotspots (in fact no mention of where the hotspots are!), nor did they offer any practical help to cyclists. In other parts of the county (Manchester, Leeds, the South East), the police have given free Imobitag devices to cyclists to help reduce thefts - can CycleDerby see whether Derbyshire police would consider a similar scheme here?

On wednesday I was in a coffee shop at the spot overlooking the Spot and one of the bike racks. Four men came along sizing up the bikes. It was clear that the bikes they had were stolen. Who cycles around on a fairly tasty claud butler racer with cycle computer drinking special brew? I called the Police, and waited a good 15-20 minutes. At this point special brew man takes out his bolt cutters and goes to snap one of the cable locks (he didnt go for my bike much to my shame - obviously there are better bikes). I ran out of the cafe to tackle him stopping him from snapping the lock. Cue a further 10-15 minutes of arguing with them and telling them they were scumbags. Eventually all of them walked away. I was concious to prolong it thinking the Police might come. Still no Police. So after about 25-30minutes still no Police and they never came. A disgrace really because they could have recovered three stolen bikes, and charges of going equipped to steal, and attempted robbery all set up for them on a plate. The worst bit though was leaving me exposed to tackling four men on my own robbing a bike. Derbyshire Police thanks alot.

Diarmuid - well done. I'm really impressed. I'm not sure I'd have had the nerve to do what you did. It's a pity that the police didn't show. Did they even respond? Is the area covered by cctv?
