Saw this interesting discussion on cycle lanes.

Derby is lucky in that our city council hasn't gone mad with the paint brush creating these things. Interesting that govt standards suggest 2 metres for a cycle lane with a minimum of 1.5 metres - experience suggests even the minimum is more the exception than the rule.

Thanks for the link, DM. Not a bad piece. I don't like cycle lanes (for many of the reasons mentioned), and use them reluctantly. Theres a stretch on the A6005 between Draycott and Borrowash when there's almost no choice. If you ride outside the (broken, so not mandatory) white lines separating the cycle lane from the road, some drivers get very aggressive, so you end up in the narrow, badly surfaced, drain-ridden lane for a miserable mile.
