Local people support cycling
Derby's local Neighbourhood Boards are working with Cycle Derby to further promote cycling throughout the city. Cycle Derby has put together a huge array of projects which go a long way in improving the health and fitness levels of; children, teenagers and their families, as well as reduce congestion and improve safety around schools.
The Neighbourhood Boards are keen to increase awareness in their local communities of the role that these projects can play in improving the quality of life and empower local people to make positive changes that enrich their lives.
One option taken up by Mackworth, Darley, Sinfin, Abbey, Chaddesden, Normanton & Derwent is a Cyclist Safety Pack for children who regularly cycle to school. Nearly 2000 pupils cycle or scooter regularly to school every day. This represents over 5% of the total school population. The pack consists of: a set of lights, a reflective band, a puncture repair kit, a cycle route map, a water bottle and a lock.
We've also given schools the choice of including cycling in their P.E lessons. The activities are geared towards developing skills and self confidence in a fun and engaging way. This activity is going ahead in; Mackworth, Darley, Mickleover, Sinfin & Allestree wards.
We're also planning to work with schools to train teaching staff to deliver Scootability. Scootability is a fun based scooter training session for kids aged 5-7 years old. The sessions involve a series of activities to improve children's skill and control on a scooter or small bike. We are currently liaising with ward schools to identify 'trainers' and will be holding training days in the New Year.
