Winter Race Series Final Round Race Report

Cyclocross Jan 11

The last of the winter series races was held at Osmaston Park on Sunday 9 January 2011. The day was perfect for Cyclo cross racing, maybe a little cold for the mums and dads but great for the children who took part in the Cycle Derby races. It was great to see so many regular children, Santa had been busy as I noticed Amari, Frances and Anna all had shiny new bikes.

The morning started off with the U8's race and the Chilton brothers were raring to go, we had riders as young as 3 in this race and it was fantastic to see them all smiling as they passed the chequered flag: 7 minutes is a long time when you are riding flat out......

As soon as the U10's race had started it was clear we had a few club riders in the race, these children had travelled from afar to complete in the National races we were organising after the Cycle Derby races and were using this race as a warm up. This left some of our top riders unsure of their position in the race, we soon rectified this when the trophies were awarded, unfortunately some of the riders had gone home before realising they had podium positions, Henry Cox being one who will be presented his trophy at school..

Again the U12's race had three club riders in the race, they lead from start to finish but were not allocated any trophies. The real racing was between Zoe, Oliver and Floyd who battled hard for 12 minutes on a longer course, it even had a hurdle on the course so the riders had to get off the bike, lift it over the hurdle before mounting the bike and riding up the hill. The rest of the under U12's were brilliant, they all showed how determined they were to complete the race, especially Joshua from St Werburg's who never gave up trying,.

The U14 & 16's race was going to be a battle from start to finish, both Marcus and Peter knew they were in contention of the overall series and they fought hard to keep going on the tough course. I have seen a massive difference in these riders as they prepare for the races, keep up the good work.

I want to say a big well done to all the children that took part in these races, the main thing is that you all came along and had fun.  Some of you showed how determined and serious you are by entering the National U10's & U12's races....this was SERIOUS, these riders had come from as far away as Scotland & Wales these children had specialist Cyclo cross bikes , all the kit, they were sponsored BUT it didn't stop  the following local children racing along side them and getting stuck in, they all got very good placing's and it shows the guts and determination they all have. Well done to :
Bailey Wilmot finished 10th  in the U12's
Ben Chilton 18th, Ethan Wilmot 20th, Amari Chikwendu 21st, Otto Chilton 28th & Regan Walton 29th all in the U10's

Now take a look at the fantastic photo's showing Derby's local superstars you are all great, keep up the riding and I look forward to seeing you again in the spring.

Tracey and the Cycle Derby Team.

Keep up the riding
