Congratulations to our World Cup Winners!
This year the Bike to School Challenge was inspired by an energetic and exciting combination of two major sporting events, the National Bike Week and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Local schools celebrated Derby's Bike to School Challenge between 11 June and 11 July by biking to school and tracking their journeys on a map from Derby city centre all the way to Johannesburg in time for the World Cup final.
During the month-long challenge pupils, parents and teachers clocked up mileage points each time they cycled or scooted to school. Each of these short local trips was awarded a set amount of kilometres, contributing to the school’s virtual journey to South Africa.
Every school was nominated a specific country to support during the World Cup and was encouraged to find out fun facts about their national team along the way.
There was stiff competition but the first to reach Johannesburg was Ash Croft Primary, Sinfin. They won £250 worth of sports equipment vouchers, a brand new bike to raffle off to pupils who took part in the Challenge and a visit from the 'Bike Pod'.
All the remaining schools that took part were entered in a Prize Draw. First out of the hat was Ravensdale Junior, Mickleover. They've won a brand new sports strip for the school's football team!
Congratulations to all that took part and made the 2010 Bike to School Challenge a striking success!
