Velodrome plans see Derby set to become a Cycling Mecca!
Derby City Council has unveiled plans to build a world class velodrome as part of a huge, £50 million overhaul of leisure facilities in the city.
The construction of the UK’s fourth indoor velodrome will further strengthen Derby's reputation as a cycling city and compliment the National Standard BMX track already in place at Alvaston Park which has received praise from top cyclists such as Shanaze Reed the former BMX Olympic finalist.
As well as the 250m velodrome, the facility would also have and an outdoor closed road cycling circuit of up to 2km which could be used for time trials. There will also be between 10 and 12 sports courts plus a new athletics track, shops and cafes.
Two possible locations have been suggested, one is the Moorways site and the other option could be at Pride Park.
Work is due to start in the Spring of 2011 and the project is expected to take 5 years to complete.
