Councillor Lucy Care speaks...

I am delighted to again be the Cabinet Member with transport responsibility. Cycle Derby has been a huge success and we are wolrking hard to up the vision and practice of cycling among young people.  But there is still much work to do. My personal priority is more work with secondary-age pupils – and to emphasise the need to address wider infrastructure issues too.  Progress in this area has not been as fast as it could be.

I believe there is scope to do more, at relatively low costs, taking advantage of piggy-backing on to existing work and thinking ‘cycle’ more decisively.

I am keen to get existing cyclists more involved in identifying ‘quick wins’ – and lobbying for them publicly.  Creating a popular demand for improved cycle facilities can, I believe, be an important way of pushing cycling up the agenda – not only politically but also with the public, businesses and service providers.

In the current economic situation, of rising energy prices, promotion of cycling offers a clear solution and the public mood is moving more and more in our favour.  Of course, that does not mean that every decision will go the way of cycling.

With the public behind us, and with myself and my cabinet colleagues giving cycling the priority it deserves, I doubt the time has ever been better to make real progress.
