Tips on fitting a cycle helmet

Cycle Derby advise cyclists to wear helmets. Here's a guide to give some tips on ensuring a good fit for your child's helmet.

  1. Measure around the child's head about 1 inch (2.5cm) above the eyebrows.
  2. Match the head size to the size of the helmet. This will be displayed on the inside of the helmet, on a label or on the box itself.
  3. Place the helmet on your child's head so it sits 1 inch (2.5cm) above the eyebrows and adjust the rear strap to ensure a snug fit, the helmet should not fall off if your child leans forward.
  4. If the helmet is loose use the foam pads, if you still have them, and place them inside the helmet to achieve a closer fit.
  5. The front strap should be as vertical as possible and should join the rear strap just under the ears.
  6. The fastened buckle should rest just under the ear, not on the jaw line.

Remember, the helmet should fit snugly and not be tight. Check by allowing the child to move their head in all directions. If the helmet does not move about, it has been fitted correctly.
