Derby Schools Community Cycle Club

clubs in action

Derby Schools Community Cycle Club, DSCCC, is a partnership between British Cycling, Cycle Derby, Derby City Council’s Sport Development, Road Safety and TravelWise, Derbyshire Sport, the voluntary sector, Sustrans, BikeIT and two School Sport Partnerships

DSCCC has been established to increase the number of children cycling in Derby. To help with this aim, DSCCC have appointed a Community Sports Cycle Coach who has established eight after school cycling clubs including;  Lees Brook Community School, Sinfin Community School and Derby Moor Community School.

The clubs have been very successful in educating pupils in a fun and exciting way.

Activities include; cycle safety, maintenance and all the different forms of cycling from commuting to school to BMX, mountain biking and cyclocross.

Funding has helped us to purchase cycle equipment, provide coaching courses and in the future establish more after-school and community clubs.

A pack has been produced to help you understand how we can help your school promote cycling and help pupils become healthier and safer cyclists.

DSCCC Aims

• To encourage more children to cycle to school.

• To give young people and the community the skills to enjoy riding their bike safely.

• To establish more after school clubs in Derby.

• To give young people the opportunity to attend Talent Identification and World Class Start programmes.

• To improve access and awareness of existing community cycling facilities.

• To promote the importance of exercise in tacking obesity and coronary heart disease.

Facts and figures

• Findings from the General Household Survey revealed that 54% of children aged 6 to 16 years said cycling was their most popular activity.

• National Research identifies that there is a strong case to be made that sport can reduce the propensity to commit crime.

• In 2000 OFSTED reported a reduction in truancy rates in schools with a PE and sport focus.
