Derby Moor

As a School Travel Plan and Sustran’s BikeIT school, Derby Moor was one of the first schools to develop an after school cycle club with the Derby Schools Community Cycle Club (DSCCC).

The school received significant support from the DSCCC as the project developed, including the provision of bikes, helmets and storage facilities from funding secured from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund NRF.

The school is now a registered Go-Ride school club, and throughout the summer term has had a weekly coaching activity.  This has been run at the school by the DSCCC appointed Community Sports Cycling Coach and the School Sports Coordinator.

The school has welcomed the project, and has, through free places provided by British Cycling and additional places paid for by the NRF funding from DSCCC, had four members of staff attend British Cycling’s one day Activity Coach Award for Teachers course.

By having four members of staff qualified to coach cycling in the school environment, the school then developed activities during curriculum time, including maintenance workshops and curriculum cycling during PE and Sport. This has been shown to have a major impact on children with behavioural problems.

In addition to the on-site sessions, the school also had a BMX track coaching session at Alvaston BMX track, led by the Community Sports Coach with school staff support, utilising the school Minibus and by transporting bikes and equipment offsite by using the bike trailer that DSCCC has purchased through the NRF funding.

To date the costs to the school for the project have been to cover staff when attending the coaching course, and in minibus support to transfer the children from the school to Alvaston BMX track.
