Cycle Training
Cycle Derby aim to offer National Standards Bikeability courses to all children across Derby. Bikeability has replaced the old Derby Bike Safe cycle training course.
National Standards cycle training covers three skills levels; 1, 2 and 3. Level 1 is basic bike handling and skills, Level 2 is basic on road training and Level 3 tackles route planning and complex junctions such as roundabouts.
We focus Level 1 training at year 5 and Level 2 year 6 school pupils. Courses are offered through schools.
The Level 1 course provides children with the skills to cycle safely in a traffic free envioment.
Level 1 cycle training covers:
A 5 point safety check carried out prior to each journey. Games aimed at acheiveing the following:
a. Ride along without help for roughly one minute
b. Use their gears correctly (where the bike has gears)
c. Stop quickly with control
d. Manoeuvre safely to avoid objects
e. Look all around, including behind, without wobbling
f. Signal right and left without wobbling
The Level 2 course offers children basic road skills and the confidence to ride their bicycle safely.
Level 2 cycle training covers:
- A 5 point safety check carried out prior to each journey.
- An assessment of basic handling skills carried out in a safe, car free environment such as a play ground
- An introduction to the highway code.
- Relevant on road training covering:
a. Left turn in from major to minor road
b. Left turn out from minor to major road
c. Right turn out from minor to major road
d. Right turn in from major to minor road
